To check which rational number is greater we need them to be like rational numbers i.e. with same denominator.

a.5/9 or 3/11.

LCM of 9 and 11 is 99.

5/9*11/11=55/99.
3/11*9/9=27/99.

Therefore,we can see that 5/9 is greater than 3/11.

b.-3/16 or -5/9.

LCM of 16 and 9=144.

-3/16=-27/144.
-5/9=-80/144.

We can see that -3/16 is greater than -5/9.
