(ii)

(a) According to Mendeleev's periodic law, the properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic masses.

(b) Noble gases are placed in a separate group of the periodic table because they are inert elements. They are unreactive as their valence shells are completely filled with electrons.

(iii) Newlands' Octaves was applicable only upto calcium (Ca), as after calcium (Ca) every eighth element did not possess the properties similar to that of the first. At the time of Newlands only 56 elements were known. Hence, Newlands' Law Octaves work well with lighter elements only.
