The occupational structure of country refers to the distribution of its labour force in different occupations. A.G.B. Fisher was the first economist to introduce the concepts of primary, secondary and tertiary occupations in 1933. According to him, a country could be classified with respect to the proportions of their total labour force engaged in these sectors.
The distribution of the population according to the different types of occupations is referred to as the occupational structure. (a) Occupations are generally classified as primary, secondary and tertiary. (b) Primary activities include agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fishing, mining and quarrying, etc. (c) Secondary activities include manufacturing industry, building and construction work, etc. (d) Tertiary activities include transport, communications, etc. (e) The proportion of people working in different activities varies in developed and developing countries.
