❍ Given Info :- In operating a water pump a resistance of 480 N is overcome by an effort of 72 N. If the distance of fulcrum from the point where the resistance acts is 0.2 m.
❍ To Find :- The distance from the fulcrum, where the effort is applied and also calculate the mechanical advantage.
☯ Solution :-
- ★ Load = 480 N
- ★ Effort = 72 N
- ★ Load Arm = 0.2 m
- ☯ Effort Arm = ?
- ☯ Mechanical Advantage = ?
1) Finding Effort Arm ,
❒ As we know that,
- ★ Load × Load Arm = Effort × Effort Arm
❍ Then,
➙ Effort Arm = Load × Load Arm / Effort
➙ Effort Arm = 480 N × 0.2 m / 72 N
➙ Effort Arm = 4 / 3 m = 1.33 m.
☯ Therefore, Effort Arm (The distance from the fulcrum, where the effort is applied) = 1.33 m.
2) Finding Mechanical Advantage ,
❒ As we know that,
- ★ Mechanical Advantage = Load / Effort
❍ Then,
➙ Mechanical Advantage = 480 N / 72 N = 6.67
☯ Therefore, Mechanical Advantage = 6.67.
Hence,
- Effort Arm = 1.33 m
- Mechanical Advantage = 6.67.
