The Doctrine of Lapse

A rule made by the British for conquering, it stated that a princely state would be annexed if the ruler did not have his own male offspring as heir. This affected may rulers as the practice was to give the kingdom to son-in-laws or adopted sons after the reign of the King. Many rulers such as Rani Laxmibai fought bravely in order to change the rule but died in the war against the British. Then again the British annexed many kingdoms through this principle.
