1. Personification comes in the second line of the fourth stanza. Here, the poet describes the train as “Shovelling white steam over her shoulder”. This is, of course, a depiction of the smoke that travels out and over the train. It is pushed behind “her” by the pressure of the wind.

2. The poem really isn't so much about dogs but the sheepdogs seem to be asleep too with the passing train. The dogs are a part of this sleepy community.
