(c)Answer the following questions with reference to the manufacture of hydrogen by Bosch process-

(i) Name the product which is formed in the endothermic reaction.

(ii) Give the equation of the exothermic reaction which takes place in the process stating the temperature and the catalyst in the equation.

(iii) The hydrogen prepared by this process generally contains two gases as impurities. Name any one gas and state the process for removal of the same.

Answer:

1) Dehydrogenation of ethyl benzene to form styrene is an endothermic reaction (ΔH = 188 kJ/m). Side products such as CH4, ethylene, benzene, and toluene are also formed during the process.

2) The general equation for an exothermic reaction is: Reactants → Products + Energy. Note: ΔH represents the change in energy. If the energy produced in an exothermic reaction is released as heat, it results in a rise in temperature.

3) In the laboratory, dihydrogen gas is prepared by taking zinc granules in a 500 ml flask.

To this, dilute HCl or dilute sulphuric acid is added through a thistle funnel.

Dihydrogen gas is released and the gas is collected by the downward displacement of water because it is a gas lighter than water
