In this experiment, the candle is used to show that the living beings use oxygen to breath.

In the setup, where the cockroach is living, it uses up the oxygen and exhales carbon dioxide and as we know burning needs oxygen and its deficit along with increase in carbon dioxide in air causes the candle to extinguish faster. This proves that living beings need oxygen.

On the other setup, dead cockroach does not respire and thus, the candle keeps burning for a longer time.

The use of candle in this experiment is to justify that living beings inspire air with more amount of oxygen(20.96%) and less amount of carbon dioxide(0.04%)and expire air with more amount of carbon dioxide(4.0%) and less amount of oxygen(16.4%).

GOOD TO KNOW:

Many people wrongly say "We inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide". Instead we should say "We inhale air containing much oxygen and very little carbon dioxide and exhale air containing much carbon dioxide and little oxygen than before.
