1. Mendel carried out crosses with two traits to see the interaction and basis of inheritance between them.He found out that the traits are independent of each other i.e. inheritance of one trait does not influence inheritance of other and thus gave law of independent assortment.

2.Mendel counted the number of second-generation (F2) progeny with dominant or recessive traits and found a 3:1 ratio of dominant to recessive traits. He concluded that traits were not blended but remained distinct in subsequent generations, which was contrary to scientific opinion at the time.
