In this figure the length of total figure is 40 cm
We know that length of figure is contributed by BC and height of congruent trapeziums ABGH and CDEF.
Let height of one trapezium be h cms.
Length of figure = BC + h + h
40 = 28 + 2h
12 = 2h
12/2 = h
h = 6 cms
Now area of a trapezium = 1/2 × height × sum of its parallel sides
Area of figure = area of trapezium ABGH + area of rectangle BCFG + area of trapezium CDEF
Area of figure = { (1/2 * 6 * (5+12) + 28*5 + (1/2 * 6 * (5+12)
Area of figure= 6*17 + 28*5
Area of figure = 102 + 140
Area of figure = 242 cm²
