The word "modem" is a contraction of the words modulator-demodulator. A modem is typically used to send digital data over a phone line. The sending modem modulates the data into a signal that is compatible with the phone line, and the receiving modem demodulates the signal back into digital data.

Explanation:

the modem stands for modulator demodulator. The need for a modem is that as the digital signals cannot be transmitted that much easily as the analog signals can.So, the modulator does the work of converting digital signals from a computer to analog signals so that they can be transmitted over a network also computer cannot read the analog signals meanwhile demodulator converts analog signals to digital one.
