Explanation:

a ) Acquired characters are inherited during lifetime. These changes occur in the non reproductive tissues i.e. the somatic cells, these cannot be passed into the DNA (genetic material) of the germ cells. Hence acquired characters are not inherited

b ) Mendel's pea experiment

  1. the F1 generation all have identical genotypes, heterozygous at the seed color gene, and their phenotypes are yellow seeds.
  2. There are four kinds of phenotypes expected in a monohybrid cross in F2 generation showing co-dominance (In the resulting F2 generation, 3/4 showed the dominant phenotype, and 1/4 showed the recessive phenotype. For example, when a round seed line was crossed to a wrinkled seed line, the F1 generation was all round, and the F2 generation showed a phenotypic ratio of 3 round : 1 wrinkled.)
  3. 9:3:3:1 phenotypic ratio is the classic Mendelian ratio for a dihybrid cross
  4. Based on these observations, Mendel formulated his first law of inheritance. This law is called the law of segregation. It states that there are two factors controlling a given characteristic, one of which dominates the other, and these factors separate and go to different gametes when a parent reproduces.
