a. Ali wasn't able to bear when her daughter and he got separated after her daughter's marriage. The hope of receiving a letter from Mariam was the only bridge between him and his daughter.
b. She dislikes the mirror and starts crying because of her picture portrayed on the mirror, i.e. her aging personality, which is the truth and bitter to bear for her. 
c. The poet's quality of optimism and his self-confidence is brought in out in this line. The poet is very sure that nothing can destroy his poetry and his friend to whom he wrote this poem will be immortal indeed.
d. In the poem "The dear departed", we see that the poet satirizes mankind. Modern man is shown to be materialistic and inhuman. The plot of the story is how the self-centered family members, assume that their father is dead and fight over the property. Therefore when they find out that Abel merry is not dead, the situation is very awkward and turns out to be hilarious.

e.The postmaster is tortured by doubt and remorse. He is remorseful over his past cruelty and insensitivity to Ali in spite of Ali being in his painful time. He had insulted him by calling him 'pest'. He is waiting for a letter from his own ill daughter, who lived quite far away in a remote town.
