The tension at the distance y from the rigid support=weght of the part of chain below y

mass of rod of length L=Mg

mass of 1unit length=M/L

length of rod below y=L-y

mass of that length=(M/L)×(L-y)

weght of that length=(M/L)×(L-y)=Mg(L-y)/L

this will be tension of the rod at length y

Hnece the required tension is Mg(L-y)/L
