Question: A train has a total mass of 7.5 × 10⁵ kg. The train accelerates from rest at a constant rate along a straight horizontal track. It reaches a speed of 24 m/s in 60 s.

Calculate:-

  • the train’s acceleration, and
  • the resultant force acting on the train.

Solution:-

  1. Mass of the train = 7.5 × 10⁵ kg
  2. Initial velocity = 0 m/s (rest)
  3. Final velocity = 24 m/s
  4. Time taken = 60 s

We know,

a = (v - u)/t

⟹ a = v/t [since u = 0; v - 0 = v]

⟹ a = (24 m/s)/(60 s)

a = 0.4 m/s²

NOW, finding resultant force:-

We know,

F = ma

⟹ F = (7.5 × 10⁵ kg)(0.4 m/s²)

⟹ F = 75 × 10³ × 4 N

⟹ F = 300 × 10³ N

F = 3 × 10⁵ N
