Explanation:

As you can see in figure the angle between the second boat and the horizontal line is 30° (Because the line of helicopter and the horizontal are parallel so by property of alternate angles )

Now let the horizontal distance between boat 2 and helicopter be x

so,

 \tan(30)  =  \frac{650 - 50}{x}

 \frac{1}{ \sqrt{3} }  =  \frac{600}{x}

x = 600 \sqrt{3} ft

Now similarly let horizontal distance between 1st boat and helicopter be y, and again by alternate angles properties angle from horizontal will be 60°

 \tan(60)  =  \frac{650 - 50}{y}

 \sqrt{3}  =  \frac{600}{y}

y =  \frac{600}{ \sqrt{3} }

now the distance D will be equal to (x-y)

D=x-y

 = 600 \sqrt{3}  -  \frac{600}{ \sqrt{3} }

By cross multiplying

 =  \frac{600 \times 3 - 600}{ \sqrt{3} }

 =  \frac{1200}{ \sqrt{3} }

Now we rationalize the denominator by multiplying and dividing by √3

 =  \frac{1200 \sqrt{3} }{3}

 = 400 \sqrt{3} ft

So D=400√3 ft

Option (b).
