i) X - Insulin

Y - Glucagon

ii) Alpha cells produce glucagon(Y)

Beta cells produce insulin(X)

iii) Function of,

X: Converts glucose into glycogen thereby reducing glucose levels in blood (hypoglycemic harmone)

Y: Converts glycogen into glucose (hyperglycemic harmone as it increases glucose levels in blood)

iv) Disorder due to hypo secretion of X: Diabetes Mellitus or Hyperglycemia. Due to hypo secretion, glucose can't be converted into glycogen so there will be excess of glucose in blood.

v) Symptoms:

  • Polyurea - excessive urination
  • Polyphagia - excessive intake of food
  • Polydipsia - excessive intakeof liquids due to thirst
  • Ketosis - Breakdown of fats resulting in accumulation of ketones
