A hook shot is played to a short ball. The ball is contacted above the waist and  the follow through is done near the chest and the head.It is the most riskiest and the most potentially dangerous shot in cricket.

the hook shot is played when ball is between the head and shoulder of the batsman. This shot is played to keep the ball along the ground not in the air. But this is not true in the case of batsmen like kohli, rohit sharma , di Villiers or ms dhoni. This shot is played on Blackfoot only.

monikadhaka2001: The batsman hits the ball towards the leg side boundary. ... The term hook shot is used when the shot is played against a ball bouncing at or above chest high to the batsman, the batsman thus "hooking" the ball around behind square leg, either along the ground or in the air.
