Here it has given a description about the two endoplasmic reticulums. ER looks like a large network of membrane bound tubes and sheets. They are of two types-

smooth endoplasmic reticulum and the rough ER.

The rough ER is attached by ribosomes that is the reason it looks irregular hence named "rough".

The smooth ER helps in the manufacture of fats and lipids for cells to function . Some of the fats and lipids are also used in building cell membrane and this is known as membrane biogenesis.
