Solid waste segregation at source makes it convenient to be used in recycling later on.

It has become a law under Waste Regulations Act, 2011.

Waste segregation saves us from several health hazards especially those arising out of pollution.

It is cheaper to dispose segregated waste because it eliminates the cost of waste sorting.

Waste segregation refers to the separation of the wet waste and dry waste so that the dry waste can be recycled and the wet waste is used as compost. Waste segregation is the reduction of garbage that gets the land, air and water occupied.

The food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink are all polluted. It looks like no place on the earth is safe to live in. Nobody except Man is to be blamed for this. Even Though people are being taught on the proper disposal of trash yet, they continue to do in their convenient way, thus polluting the environment causing many diseases.

Wastes can be segregated as

i) Biodegradable - wastes that include organic wastes like kitchen wastes, vegetables, fruits, flowers, leaves from the garden and paper.

Non - Biodegradable waste can be further segregated as

a) Recyclable waste - plastics, paper, glass, metal etc..

b) Toxic Waste - old medicines and old batteries, paints, chemicals, bulb, spray cans, fertiliser and pesticide containers and shoe polish.

Toxic waste must be disposed of with utmost care.
