Ohh its a good question, well here is the answer:-

Remember the lens and mirror formula?

Mirror formula:1/v + 1/u = 1/f
Lens formula: 1/v - 1 = 1/f

Only one formula for each, this was possible just because of the convention we have made. This was made for the covinience for calculation

If there was no convention, there would be many formula for each mirror and lens, considering the positiin of object, lens and mirrors.

CONVENTIONS ARE:
1.objects are always kept towards the left of the origin in a cartesian plane, hence object distance is always negetive.

2.concave mirror image falls on the same side as that if the object hence, image distance is also negetive, for convex mirror image falls on right side hence image distance for convex mirror is positive

3.covex lens image is in other side of object, hence it is positive. Concave lens image is formed on the same side of object hence it is negetive.

NOTE:
1.You can make ray diagram and understand
2.Remeber to always keep object on left side of the origin in a cartesian plane.
