\boxed{Speed:} Speed of a body distance travelled by the body in unit time.

Speed = \frac{Distance\:Travelled}{Time\:Taken}

Speed is Denoted by U. The distance present in an interval of time T is Denoted by S.

U = \frac{S}{T}


To specify the speed of a moving object we require only its magnitude ( direction is not described ) so, \textbf{speed\:is\:a\:\\scalar \:quantity.}

The SI unit of speed is \frac{m}{s} OR

{ms}^{-1}

and CGS system it is \frac{cm}{s}

{cms}^{-1}

Another unit of speed is \frac{km}{s}

\boxed{Average\:Speed:} While travelling in a therapy have noticed that the driver changes speed of the moving car from time to time depending upon the traffic and the road conditions.
So, we describe the rate of motion of such objects in terms of their average speed.

The average speed of a body in a given time interval is defined as the Total distance travelled divided by the time interval.

Average Speed = \frac{Total\:Distance\:Travelled}{Total\:Time\:Taken}


\textbf{Note*} Time interval means duration of time and not an instant time.


\boxed{Instantaneous\:Speed:} The speed of an object at any instant during its motion is called Instantaneous Speed.

Automobiles are fitted with a device called an odometer which measures the distance travelled by it.

The odometer records the distance in kilometres.

\textbf{Remember*} When a body moves with uniform speed, then the average speed is same as instantaneous speed. Speedometer measures the instantaneous speed of vehicle.
