Oxidation and Reduction

The names may seem bit hard, but the concept is so easy.

Oxidation : It is the adding of Oxygen or Removal of hydrogen.

Reduction : It is the addition of hydrogen or removal of oxygen.

Let's us consider the equation,

H2 + O2 = H20

Here, Let's consider H2 and H20

H2 is the reactant

H2O is the product.

If you compare, You see there is a oxygen in the product.

So, oxygen is added to H2 to give H2O.

Addition of oxygen is Oxidation. So, We can conclude H2 is being oxidised.

Now, What's the case of O2.

O2 is the reactant

H2O is the product.

If you compare, You see there is a Hydrogen in the product.

So, Hydrogen is added to O2 to give H2O.

Addition of hydrogen is Reduction . So, We can conclude O2 is being reduced.

Few more concepts related to this

Here, H2 is being oxidised. But this is because it reacted with O2, So O2 is the oxidizing agent.

Any substance which is added to oxidize is a oxidising agent.

And Consider O2 case, It is being reduced. This is because of reaction with H2, So H2 is the reducing agent.

Any substance which is added to reduce is a reducing agent.

We end with a final concept

Redox reactions : The reactions in which both oxidization and Reduction takes place, Such are called Redox reactions.
