An Earthquake
Among the vagaries of nature, the earthquakes are the most frightening. the reason is that their time, place and intensity cannot be forecast. The seismologists are able to tell only the cause of the quakes. nothing else can be predicted. we are told that Lava is the main cause of the earthquakes. we are also told about the earthquakes zones of the world. among the countries which have been seen frequent quakes are Japan, Italy, Iraq, and California in the U.S.A. Still, they may occur anywhere at any time. in the recent past, India has suffered some of the worst quakes later in Maharashtra, Uttar Kashi in Uttrakhand and Bhuj in Gujarat. The one in Gujarat which happened on 26th january, 2001 is such devastating that it may be counted among the worst of the world. When the nation was celebrating its Republic Day a very vast area of gujaraj was experiencing the tremors which flattened many cities, towns and villages. Gujarat's capital city, ahmedabad, saw so many buildings falling down like pack of cards. Bhuj city also suffered the worst. Many small and big cities are totally devasted. Count of the dead was running in thousands. it may cross 30,000 - 35,000 not to mention the loss of property. it is anybody's guess that rebuilding that vast areas of the state will need thousands of crores, but who can bring back the dear ones who have been victims to the earthquakes which was never known beforehand. May god save us from this fury of nature.
Such situations bring out the real face of man both ugly and bright. the quake in gujarat was shown how greed plays with the life of men. Many people died because greedy builders had used sub-standard material in the construction of the high-buildings. these high buildings fell down like pack of cards and hundreds of people died.
The brighter side of men also came up as hundreds rushed to help the victims from all parts of the country and even abroad. Help in the form of money and material has shown that milk of human kindness has not dried up. Good word done by our armed forces. central and state government is also praiseworthy. such calamities bring about sympathy and kindness.
Another aspect of such calamity may bring some good also. The strong-will of man will prevail and a better gujarat may be built, provided sincere work continues to be done. Even the nature may show its kindness in the form of sweet water and more crops. man has to show his fortitude.
