Hassan was a Serang in a ship in which the author Dr AJ Cronin was traveling from Liverpool to Calcutta. He was an ugly looking person with a really large head and short legs. Throughout the trip, he maintained a squatting position. When there was an outbreak of smallpox on board, Hassan did not hesitate for a minute to attend to the sick. Later, when the author offered him a monetary compensation, Hassan gently declined the offer saying he had no use of money as he had all that he needed.
