Fuse is connected in series in a circuit because if the flowing current exceeds its sage limit, then fise will melt itself preventing the appliance from damaging.

Fuses are always connected in series with the component(s) to be protected from overcurrent.

A fuse is an electrical safety device that operates to provide overcurrent protection of an electrical circuit.
