There are three types of solution :

  1. Hypotonic : The concentration of water is more ,which means that the solution is dilute . If a cell is placed in this solution ,water will enter the cell through osmosis and the cell will SWELL .
  2. Hypertonic : The concentration of salt or the solute is more ,which means that it is a concentrate .This means that the cell placed in this solution will give out water through osmosis and will SHRINK .
  3. Isotonic : The concentration of the solute is equal to the solvent (water .)Thus ,an equilibrium is created . The cell placed in this gives out water ,but the same amount enters it by osmosis ,due to which it remains the SAME SIZE .
