since given that

triangle ABC~triangle DEF

then

area(triangle ABC)/area (triangleDEF)=AB^2/DE^2

(we know that the ratio of area of two similar triangle is equal to the ratio of square of their coresponding sides)

then

1/2=4^2 /DE^2

DE^2= 16×2

DE^2=32

DE=

 \sqrt{32}

then

DE =

4 \sqrt{2}

this is your answer......

thanks....
