Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

a = (3 + √5)/2

1/a =[ 1/(3+√5)/2]

1/a = 2/(3+√5)

Rationalising we get

2/(3+√5) ×[ (3-√5)/(3-√5)]

= (6 - 2√5)/[(3)^2 - (√5)^2]

=(6-2√5/(9 - 5)

=(6 - 2√5)/4 = 6/4 - 2√5/4= 3/2 - √5/2

1/a = (3 - √5)/2

Now a^2 + 1/a^2 = (a + 1/a)^2 - 2 [ using identity (a+b)^2 and cancelling the 2ab term

= [ (3 + √5)/2 + (3 - √5)/2 ]^2 - 2

= [ (3 + √5 + 3 - √5 )/2 ]^2 - 2

= 6^2 - 2

= 36 -2

= 34 ( Ans)
