Baldeo worked as a watchman at the village station. He had to see that the lamp at the station was always burning. He also had to make sure ensure that the tunnel was clear of any obstructions so that the overland mail could pass safely.
             He felt he was lucky to get this job because it was an extra income for him. His small rice fields did not provide enough.

             As usual, one night, Baldeo set out for his job. He found that the lamp was not burning. So he lighted it and put it up in its place. Suddenly he heard some noise coming from the bushes. After sometime, he saw a pair of greenish gleaming eyes peeping through the darkness. He realized that it was the man-eating tiger the villagers used to talk about. He fought bravely with his family axe. But the tiger killed him in the end.

            Baldeo had inserted the axe in the shoulder of the tiger. The tiger had been wounded badly so he lay on the track licking his wounds. At that time the overland mail came. It went into the tunnel. On the way it trampled over the tiger’s body. On the next station when the driver got down for a break he came to know about it.
             For two days Baldeo’s family was grief-stricken. But life had to move on. The job of the watchman was passed on to his son, Tembu. This boy kept the family axe with him always. The axe which was use by his father. Tembu knew how to use it.

Tembu was twelve years old and used to live with his family. They were not rich and had to face a hard time to fulfill their needs. Other than farming, his father used to work as a watchman in a nearby railroad station. his duty is to keep the signal lamp burning and make sure that the tunnel is clear of obstruction so that the overland mail can pass through safely. Tembu used to accompany his father when he had spare time. One night when his father went out to check the signal lamp, he was alone in the hut. He was frightened alone and expected some wild attack. He has heard tales of a famous man-eating tiger. 

When Baledo was lightening the lamp, a tiger appeared and heads straight towards Baldeo. The tiger attacked him and succeed in killing him but while doing this he got injured too. When he tried to move away the train ran over it. 

Tembu comes out to search for his father and as he finds him dead, controls himself and protects his fathers body from the hyenas with the help of his fathers axe. Baldeo’s family was in a shock but life had to go on and Tembu had to take place of Baldeo.
