Answer:

The poet Grace Nichols watches a gull –which is a bird found in the seas, and comments on the problems the gull has to face because of environmental pollution. The poet says that a gull covered with oil is trying very hard to come to the shore, almost struggling while managing to do so. The gull is covered with a layer of oil, which has probably come from a leaking oil tanker ship at sea. The bird that the poet sees, is a fully-grown bird. But due to the heavy coating of oil that the bird is covered with, she is finding it hard to use her wings properly. Hence she almost looks like a very thin and young bird, who feels confused while trying to fly for the first time. The wings of the gull are covered with tar –which is a thick, dark and sticky layer of oil. This makes her wings very heavy as lead –which is a metal with a considerable weight. The thick tar also makes her feet uncomfortable and thus she moves unsteadily. The poet says that the gull stares at her and the people around her without blinking. The stare is almost atomic (or, indivisible) –that is, the stare is full of uncut attention. The look on the gull’s face is also perhaps a bit comical –as it is very unusual for a normal, healthy bird to behave in a such a way. The gull does not look like she has taken the side of all birds and animals, who is looking forward to complain to human beings on their behalf. But she has certainly lost her natural home –that is, clear, sea water, free from any oil spillage or other pollutants. The poet feels that the poor gull which cannot speak, has a deep grievance or accusation locked up in her throat. The bird as if tries to ask human beings –why she should have to pay the price of human development. Human beings, in the name of development, often cause huge damage to the environment. However, why should innocent creatures have to suffer pain because of all these senseless activities of human beings?
