Given:

Number of children=24

Children who play cricket=16

Children who play only cricket=12

To find:

The number of children who play only hockey

Solution:

The number of only hockey-playing children is 8.

Total students=number of cricket-playing students+number of hockey-playing students-number of cricket and hockey playing students

The number of cricket and hockey playing students=Number of cricket playing students - number of only cricket playing students

=16-12

=4

Using the values,

24=16+ number of hockey-playing students - 4

24=12+number of hockey-playing students

24-12=number of hockey-playing students

12=number of hockey-playing students

Now, the number of only hockey-playing children=number of hockey-playing children - number of children who play both

The number of only hockey-playing children=12-4=8

Thus, the number of only hockey-playing children is 8.
