Let the age of the father be x years and

Let the age of the son be y years

five years ago,                                              five years hence,

x-5=7(y-5)                                                      x+5=3(y+5)

x-5=7y-35                                                      x+5=3y+15

x-7y=-30 ---------(1)                                          x-3y=10 ------------(2)

Now,  by applying elimination in equations (1) and(2), we get

y=10, x=40
