In Lewis Dot Structure, dots represent valence electrons.


In the figure on the left, we have Al (Aluminium). There are 3 valence electrons. Al loses these three electrons to form Al^{3+} cation.


Next, in the figure on the right, we have I (Iodine). We see that there are 7 valence electrons. Thus, an Iodine atom would gain one electron to complete the octet.

Now, Al loses three electrons, which would be gained by 3 Iodine atoms.

Thus, the compund formed is AlI_3

We can see that for each Aluminium cation, three Iodine anions are required.

So, ratio of cation to anion is 1:3
