respiration is rhythmic because it takes place in certain interval when blood is full of Oxygen and it transports it to the cell of the body but exchange of gases is just due to inhalation and exhalation which is a continuous process for survival. respiration takes place at cellular level when the oxygen reaches them which is only possible after exhalation.
