Given

length = width - 1 m

Area = 42 m²

To find

Width

Solution

Let width of the rectangle be x metres.

Length of the rectangle = (x-1 )m

Area of the rectangle = length × breadth

42 = x(x-1)

x²- x -42 = 0

x²-7x+6x-42 = 0

x( x- 7 ) +6 (x -7) = 0

( x- 7 ) (x + 6) = 0

x-7 = 0 or x +6 = 0

x = 7 or x = -6

Rejecting x = -6

Width of the rectangle = 7 m
