number of students failed = 60.

tolal number of students appeared in the examination = ?

let ,

the total number of students be x.

then,

85% passed the examination it means that 15% failed the examination.

it means that 15% students failed out of total number of students ( x ).

and ,x/100 × 15 = 60.

x = 60/15 × 100.

x = 400.

hence , total number of students are 400.

400/100 × 15 = 60.

we have to prove this true so,that we can conform our answer.

LHS = 400/100 × 15

= 4 × 15

= 60
