Answer:

a) Let us make a circuit as shown in following diagram. Let us assume that three resistors R1 ,R2 and R3 are in parallel combination. Currents I1 ,I2 and I3 are flowing respectively through R1 ,R2 and R3 . Potential difference in the circuit is V and current through the circuit is I.

As per Ohm's Law:

Current through R1 is I1 = V/R1

Current through R2 is I2 = V/R2

Current through R3 is I3 = V/R3

And current through the circuit is I = V/R

where R is equivalent resistance

Using above equations, we get

I = I1+ I2+ I3

or, I = V/R1 + V/R2 + V/R3

or, I = v (1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3)

this means that;

1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3

b) (i) Parallel connection is a better way to connect lights and other appliances in domestic circuit. (a) When we connect a number of devices in parallel combination, each device gets the same potential as provided by the battery and it keeps on working even if other devices stop working.
