Finish the independent reading you chose earlier in the course, if you haven't already: a book with a movie adaptation. If you did not complete the independent reading activity, choose a movie based on a book you've already read. Then plan an informational essay that compares the book to the movie. For example, how closely does the movie follow the book? How does it differ from the book? What decisions did the actors, directors, or other filmmakers make that surprised you? How did those decisions affect the story? Support your observations with evidence from the book and the movie.
1. Read the assignment prompt. What book and movie adaptation will you use for your essay? In a few sentences, summarize the story.
2. Brainstorm details from the book and the movie so you can compare and contrast them. You can make a T-chart, create a cluster diagram, or freewrite.
3. From your brainstorm in question 2, identify some major similarities and differences between the book and the movie adaptation. Briefly describe them and their effects on the story.
4. Using the information in questions 2 and 3, write the thesis of your informational essay. This should be the main idea you want to share with your audience.
5. List supporting details from the book and movie that back up your thesis. Write down quotes or paraphrases of information in both versions of the story that you think will be useful. If the quote or information comes from a particular part of the book, make sure you list the page number where you found it.
6. Fill in the blanks to complete the outline of your informational essay. Make sure your thesis, topic sentences, and supporting details follow an organizational pattern that fits the assignment prompt at the beginning of this practice guide.

The thesis can include the following information:

For the following thesis, the topic I have chosen as the book with a movie adaptation is, Harry Potter.

Since the books are an 8-part series, the summary will leave out many details but the major part of the story revolves around our protagonist whose named harry potter. The main antagonist is called Voldemort and the characters do not refer to this name as they feel it’s taboo, that’s how he’s established as a fearful figure in the story. The books all revolve around harry growing up each year and having to face the enemies sent by him at the end of each year finally Voldemort himself here he successfully drafts him and saves the wizarding world.

So many books are being made into movies, which begs the question:

Are movie adaptations better?

While comparing the two, one noticeable difference was the lack of multiple characters, especially characters that made the book very enjoyable. Although, this is understandable as movies have a certain budget, and using CGI, especially for a fantasy genre will be hard, unlike books where the most magical and impossible feats can be described in a few sentences or paragraphs with words. The characters have also been altered maybe to save time or maybe because they wanted certain characters to be adored over others. A lot of the changes were positive as well as negative. The best part of the movie is that it is a very beautiful visual story that you can enjoy in parts in under 3 hours while one of the books might take you a whole day but the details in the books and the world-building makes the time spent worthwhile.

Therefore both sides have their pros and cons but it can be concluded that the source material makes one truly invested in the world and its characters since we see their internal dialogues as well.
