Potential energy of a body is the work done to take the body to that height.Suppose a body of mass "m" is is raised to a distance "h".The force acting on a body is the gravitational pull of the earth(i.e.)m*g which acts downward to lift the body above the surface area of the earth. In this condition,we have to do the work against gravity.

Work done = F*s

Work done = mg*h

Work done = mgh

Potential energy = mgh (or) m*g*h

Hence, the work is stored up in the form of potential energy.

someshwarte: You are saying that work done=potential energy ??
