Macbeth (or The Scottish Play, as we call it in theatre)
by Shakespeare

The story starts with Macbeth and Banquo (King Duncan's generals) riding their horses on a deserted path. They are obstructed by three witches who prophesize that one day Macbeth shall rule Scotland but the future kings will descend from Banquo.
Macbeth thinks about this during his whole journey and on reaching home, he tells this to his wife, Lady Macbeth.
Lady Macbeth is a greedy woman (and simply the best villain Shakespeare has ever created) and she plots King Duncan's murder. First, Macbeth is reluctant to follow his wife's will but then, overridden by his own greed, he agrees to assassinate Duncan. He stabs Duncan with a knife and becomes the king.
On gaining the throne, Macbeth orders the mercenary to kill Banquo's sons.
Meanwhile, Lady Macbeth is overcome with guilt and fear. SHe constantly washes her hands for she always sees them stained and covered in Duncan's blood, reminding her of her evil deeds.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are haunted by the ghost of Duncan (which is merely a hallucination because of their guilt).
Lady Macbeth is plunged into insanity.
Then Macduff leads Malcolm (Duncan's son whom Macbeth failed to kill) and his army against Macbeth and they kill Macbeth and Malcolm claims what is rightfully his; the throne of Scotland.

Technically,
A guy is told by three crazy ladies that he will get a promotion. He tells this to his ambitious wife. Wife forces him to kill his boss. Man kills his boss. Man and his wife are overcome by guilt and fear. Wife washes her hands a lot. They lose their mind. Boss' son comes and kills the man.
