1. He used to go to the post office daily as he was expecting a letter from his beloved daughter Miriam whom he had not seen for the past 5 years.

2. Ali was an old man who lived a life of loneliness. There as no happiness in his life. His only daughter had shifted to punjab after getting married and he desperately longed for a letter from her end. People at the post office insulted him, ridiculed him but he paid no attention to them. He only wanted a letter from his daughter. It seemed that the only aim of his existence was to get a letter from his daughter which came only after his death. He didn't receive it when he was alive and thus, led a cheerless life.

3.The post office had became a holy place for Ali. And he was like a pilgrim on a holy journey as he had visited there on daily basis.
- he has oodles of love for his only daughter Miriam. So great is the shock of her separation that he decides to live only for receiving her letter.
-For 5 long years he comes every working day to the post office to see if there is a letter from his daughter.
-Every morning he is the first to arrive at the post office and lthe last one to go.

4.Although Ali was so obsessed with hunting that he could not pass a single day without it, his life took a new return after his daughter's marriage.As soon as his beloved daughter left him, a deep sense of loneliness came into his life. For the first time he felt the pain of separation. He gave up hunting and began appreciating the nature's beauty. He came to the conclusion that the whole universe is built up through love and that grief of separation is inescapable. Realising this he wept bitterly. From that day on till the last day of his life he got up early in the morning everyday and walked to the post office without caring for the adversities of weather or the strains of the journey to enquire of weather there was a letter for him from his daughter.

5.There is no doubt that Ali was a familiar figure at the post office. He was a regular visitor there and would come there everyday early in the morning and occupied a particular seat in a particular corner of the verandah. Someone who visits a particular place everyday for five long years. it is but natural that he becomes a familiar figure there. Not only was he a familiar figure for the post office employees, he was alo an object of ridicule for them. They even played pranks on him by falsely calling out his name as if a letter hadarrived for him. They would often discuss him and his strange behaviour.

6. Ali was h hunter erlir. He had on daughter who got married to a soldier and left Sli. There was no news of her for 5 years. Ali became lonely and suffered from the pangs of love and separation. He gave up hunting. He always expected a letter from his daughter Miriam and regularly went to post office to took her letter.
