Answer:

Ans1: (a)proper

A mixed fraction when converted to a complete fraction it will be an improper fraction. So the reciprocal is a proper fraction.

Ans2: (d)none of these

We know that 1¾ is 7/4. Therefore the reciprocal is 4/7 which is none of these.

Ans3: (Total amount of milk=20/3L

No. of people=10

Therefore the amount of milk each person will get=(20/7)/10

=>20/7*1/10=20/70=2/7L(the book might be wrong. Just ask a teacher as I also get some printing mistakes(typing mistake))

Ans4:(b)395

fraction of the people who participated=5/6

total no. of people=474

Therefore the no.of people who participated=5/6*474=395

Ans5:(c)720

No.of months in one year=12

No.of months in a century=12 * 100=1200

Therefore the no.of months in 3/5th of a century =3/5*1200=720

Ans6:

By taking the LCM of the numerators of the fractions = 24

So,

¾*24/24=18/24

⅔*24/24=16/24

½*24/24=12/24

5/6*24/24=20/24

⅞*24/24=21/24

Therefore this becomes simpler for us to write in ascending order, i.e.,

12/24<16/24<18/24<20/24<21/24

Therefore the fractions in ascending order: ½,⅔,¾,5/6,⅞.

Ans7(a):

Since the denominator is the same, simply add the numerators without changing the denominator, i.e.,

1/12+5/12+7/12=13/12

Ans7(b):

Since the denominators are not the same we find the LCM of the denominators i.e., 30.

Now we convert each mixed fraction into an improper fraction, i.e.

1½=3/2

2⅓=7/3

Now make the denominator the same as the LCM of them:

3/2*30/30 = 45/30

7/3*30/30 = 105/30

6/15*30/30 = 12/30

Now add the numerators:

45/30+105/30+12/30 = 162/30

Now simplify the fraction:

27/5.

Ans7(c):

Make the fractions proper or improper:

2⅓=7/3

3½=7/2

1¼=5/4

Then make the denominator same by finding LCM:

7/3=28/12

7/2=42/12

5/4=15/12

Now simplify the numerators and let the denominator as it is, i.e.,

55/12.

Ans7(d):

5/7-3/5=(25-3)/35=22/35

Ans7(e):

2⅓+3½-1¼ = 7/3+7/2-5/4=(140-30)/24=55/12

Ans7(f):

2½*3¼=5/2*13/4=65/8

Ans7(g):

10*4¼=10*17/4=170/4=85/2

Ans7(h):

5/9*5/8=(5*5)/(9*8)=25/72

Ans7(i):

⅛ of 756/- = ⅛*756 = 189/2 = 94½m

Ans7(j):

3/5 of 62½ = 3/5*62½= 3/5*125/2=375/10=37.5= 37½m

Ans7(k):

(5/8)/(2/3)=5/8*3/2=15/16

Ans7(l):

(11/13)/22=11/13*1/22=11/286=1/26

Ans7(m):

(6¼)/(2¼)=25/4*4/9=100/36=25/9

Ans7(n):

100/(10/7)=100*7/10=70

Ans8:

Amount of grapes with Sunita=10kg

amount given to her friends = 3½+2¼kg

=7/2+9/4

=23/4kg

Therefore the amount of grapes left with her=10-23/4=17/4=4¼kg

Ans9:

Distance covered in 1 hr = 1½km

Therefore speed = 1½km/hr

We know that,

speed = distance/time

Therefore distance = speed * time

= 1½ * 2½

=3/2*5/2

=15/4km

=3¾km

Ans10:

Weight of 6 books = 6⅓kg

Weight of one book = (6⅓)/6

=19/2*1/6

=19/12kg
