Given

Find the solutions of following quadratic equation

k² - 3k - 10 = 0

Solution

= k² - 3k - 10 = 0

Solve by splitting middle term

= k² - 5k + 2k - 10 = 0

= k(k - 5) + 2(k - 5) = 0

= (k - 5) (k +2) = 0

Either

=> k - 5 = 0

=> k = 5

or

=> k + 2 = 0

=> k = -2

Alternative method

solve by applying quadratic formula

x = -b±√b² - 4ac/2a

so, k² - 3k - 10 = 0

a = 1 b = -3 c = -10

=> k = -(-3)±√(-3)² - 4×1×(-10)/2×1

=> k = 3 ± √ 9 + 40/2

=> k = 3 ± √49/2

=> k = 3 ± 7/2

=> k = 3+7/2 , 3-7/2

=> k = 10/2 , -4/2

=> k = 5, -2
