twinkling of stars is due to atmospheric refraction of starlight the starlight on entering the earth's atmosphere undergrowth and refraction continuously before it reaches there at the atmospheric refraction occurs in a medium of gradually changing refractive index since the atmosphere bands starlight towards the normal the Apparent position of the star is slightly different from is actual position the star appears like the higher than its actual position when brought near the horizon
