Using the general rule, we have to estimate each multiplicand and multiplier to their greatest place values.

(a) 578 × 161.

As both 578 and 161 are three-digit numbers,

⇒  578 is estimated to the nearest hundreds as 600.

⇒  161 is estimated to the nearest hundreds as 200.

Thus the product estimated will be 600 × 200 = 1,20,000.

(b) 5,281 × 3,491

As both 5,281 and 3,491 are four-digit numbers,

⇒  5,281 is estimated to the nearest thousands as 5,000.

⇒  3,491 is estimated to the nearest thousands as 3,000.

Thus the product estimated will be 5,000 × 3,000 = 1,50,00,000.

(c) 1,291 × 592

As 1,291 is a four-digit number and 592 is a three-digit number,

⇒  1,291 is estimated to the nearest thousands as 1,000.

⇒  592 is estimated to the nearest hundreds as 600.

Thus the product estimated will be 1,000 × 600 = 6,00,000.

(d) 9,250 × 29

As 9,250 is a four-digit number and 29 is a two-digit number,

⇒  9,250 is estimated to the nearest thousands as 9,000.

⇒  29 is estimated to the nearest tens as 30.

Thus the product estimated will be 9,000 × 30 = 2,70,000.
