Answer:

x= 4 and y= -3

Step-by-step explanation:

Q. 5/x+1 - 2/y-1 = 1/2

    10/x+1 + 2/y-1 =5/2

Let  1/x+1 = a and 1/y-1 =b

Then,

    5a - 2b= 1/2          ....(1)

    10a + 2b =5/2       .....(2)

By Elimination method, Add (1) and (2),

You get,

15a = 3

a =1/5                         ....(3)

Substituting (3) in (1),

5(1/5) - 2b = 1/2

-2b = 1/2

b = -1/4

Now,

1/x+1 = a =  1/5

x+1 = 5

x= 4

1/y-1 =b = -1/4

y-1 = -4

y= -3

Answer:

The study of mathematics as a "demonstrative discipline" begins in the 6th century BC with the Pythagoreans, who coined the term "mathematics" from the ancient Greek μάθημα (mathema), meaning "subject of instruction".[4] Greek mathematics greatly refined the methods (especially through the introduction of deductive reasoning and mathematical rigor in proofs) and expanded the subject matter of mathematics.[5
