Latitude comes from the Latin word LATITUDO meaning width. They are series of parallel circles. The horizontal circle that goes around the globe exactly in the middle at equal distance from North Pole to south poles is called Equator. Half of the earth between the equator and North Pole is called the northern hemisphere and the half that is between the equator and the South Pole is called is Southern hemisphere. There are 180 latitude. Latitudes help in knowing the variation climate. This is the circle best designated as zero degrees latitude. Latitudes are expressed in degrees, minutes ('), seconds (")
LONGITUDE..
Latin gives us the word LONGITUDO meaning length. Longitudes are not full circles.. the longitude that passes through the astronomical observatory at Greenwich, England is called this zero degree meridian or the Prime Meridian or the Greenwich Meridian. 0° to 180 degree going East which are the east longitude and zero degree to 180 degree going West which are the west longitudes. There are 360 longitudes. Longitudes help us to determine the time..
