hello frnd:

themes of the canterville ghost are as follows:
1.American and British cultures

2.mercy

3.life and death and love.

THEMES IN DETAIL:

1.American and British cultures:

--The fuddy-duddy British don’t understand American carelessness.
--The author depicts oversea relatives of English with tender emotions.
-- They are like small children who haven’t reached the European elegancy and level of intelligence.
-- The humor in the story is gentle, not sarcastic.
--The author is mocking at stereotypes, both British (this role plays the housekeeper) and American (political fancy of the ambassador, addition to use widely advertised American agents) in kind and soft manner, not to offend anybody.
-- But still this conflict of spiritual values and consumerism remains one of the main themes of the story.

2.mercy:

--in the story,We are so busy with laughing at the poor ghost that we don’t see what is hidden deeper in his soul.
-- He is not scary at all, but he is easy to scare. --Sometimes we may feel pity for him, but we don’t notice how miserable he is.
--But Virginia sees that and she wants to help him.
-- She tries to explain the ghost that he shouldn’t have killed his wife (“It is very wrong to kill any one”) and when the ghost opens his soul and tells her everything, she wants to do all her best to set him free.
--And she did.
--He dies and goes to the Garden of Death, where he is finally free, and all his sufferings are over.
--He found the peace and rest. And Virginia, who has a kind heart and mercy, is happy for him.
--She says that it is she who owed him a great deal, because he made her see “what Life is, what Death signifies, and why Love is stronger than both”.

3.Life and Death and Love

--The ghost makes Virginia to see that.
-- But she doesn’t want to tell anyone about it, why? --Maybe because it is too personal or the ghost asked her not to tell, or maybe because everybody should see it without any help or prompts.
--Life is beautiful and we must keep it, but should we be afraid of Death?
-- Definitely we should not.
-- The ghost says “Death must be so beautiful”, for him Death is not the end it is the beginning of something more than Life, it is a desirable peace and calm, it is stronger than Life.
-- But there is one more thing that is even stronger than both.
--It is Love.
--It has the greatest power in the world and if you have Love in your heart, you would be happy and would make happy every person around you, like Virginia did.

i hope it helps u !☺
