Piano tuning must be practiced. A beginner has no hope of tuning a piano unless a machine is being employed and even then manipulation of the tuning pins is tricky. Tuning a piano by ear is another matter entirely. It’s not a matter of pitch recognition, one must learn to listen for the beats between ‘mistuned’ intervals to achieve an equal temperment in the middle of the piano range. And for the extremes another kind of ‘mistuning’ to suit the ear is required. As a former piano tuner, my teacher told me it takes about 2 years to learn how to tune a piano well entirely by ear. And I believe that to be true.....
